Wheelchair

Every morning I enjoy my coffee from my white mug sitting on my porch. Black without white. I watch the young couple leaving their apartment. She is in a wheelchair, and he is pushing her. Their daily routine.

I do not know if he is a caregiver or a lover, or even a husband. Regardless, I am sure he cares for her. He will stand in front of her and look at her to make sure that she looks nice. Tidying her clothes and making sure she is sitting correctly and comfortably in her wheelchair. This same routine that I see from my porch every single morning.

Life put this couple to the test. She is beautiful but cannot walk; he is handsome but responsible for her. Life sometimes brings things to us, and for some reason and we can’t figure it out. Good or bad. Reward or punishment.

I asked myself, what if their roles were reversed, and he was the one in the chair? Some people are wired to give up. Others commit and persevere to the end.

People are like metals: some are cheap, but some are gold. Knowing the quality of people is difficult, but no relationship will pass without a test. That test reveals their quality. One of my teachers said, “A goldsmith tests gold with fire; life tests us with difficulty!”

Every morning, when I see the two coming out of their apartment, she is in a wheelchair, and he is pushing her. I wonder to myself, what if — These are just my own thoughts.

At a hospital abroad, I recall I saw a man carrying his wife because the hospital could not provide him with a wheelchair. He was struggling. Was it love, mercy, or both?! What if — Nonsense!

You never know who will go the extra mile for you. So be kind. Reality is often different than what we might expect.

Thank you for reading!
