I was walking on a side street near Taksim Square in Istanbul. My daughter pointed out at a nearby bakery. There was fresh bread on display, and the flavorful aroma filled the air.

We stepped inside the bakery, and I felt like a kid in a candy store. As I looked upon the many options and delicious choices, I noticed something strange.

At the front of the bakery were bags placed for customers to fill their bread. However, some customers would buy two of the bags, fill one up with their purchase, and leave the other one behind!

I noticed some people would come in, take a bag, and leave without so much as a word with the baker.

I pointed it out to my daughter, and we both wondered what could be going on.

One of the ladies working at the bakery explained that it was a donation to help the less fortunate. Those who wanted to donate would pay for an extra bag and hang it in the front of the shop, and those who need help can take the bag of bread; no questions asked.

My daughter told her how nice this was, and that she would like to buy an extra bag of bread as well.

The lady asked, “Do you have this in America?

My daughter answered, “We do, in a different way. We have food banks to feed the needy.”

It is a good feeling to help others.

A wonderful feeling to help others.

Thank you for reading.
